Sallye Hood

Sallye Hood,85, of Town Creek passed away Sunday, August 3, 2025. Public viewing will be held at Jackson Memory Funeral Home, Friday, August 8, 2025 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. The funeral will be Saturday, August 9, 2025 at First M.B. Church in Town Creek at 12:00 pm. Burial will be in Jones Cemetery. 

Mrs. Sallye Goode Hood, 85, a beloved mother, educator, and mentor, passed away on August 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with Dementia. Born on January 9, 1940, in Town Creek, AL, Sallye dedicated her life to shaping young minds and inspiring a love for learning.

Sallye Goode Hood is the oldest child of the late Clyde and Effie Goode Town Creek, Alabama. She attended Courtland High School where she was very active in many organizations and clubs.

After graduating from high school, Mrs. Hood attended Alabama A&M University, Normal, Alabama where she received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English. She also became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Gamma Mu Chapter in 1961.

Upon graduation from college, Mrs. Hood was an impactful educator in several student lives at Courtland, Hazlewood, and Hatton high schools in Lawrence County, Alabama. During her teaching tenure, she received many awards, trophies and recognitions for outstanding performances. Mrs. Hood was an educator for 36 years. Prior to retiring she was an active community leader.

After retiring, she continued to work in the community. She was the first Black to be appointed to the Town Creek Library Board. Later, she became the President of the Board. She also started a successful tutoring program for failing students of all races and nationality. She was a community girl’s scout leader. At Town Creek Missionary Baptist Church, she served as the youth Sunday school teacher and a member of the Usher Board, Mother’s Board, and the missionary society.

Mrs. Hood interacted with friends and other elder individuals at the senior center in Town Creek. She visited and surprised them with gifts on special occasions and holidays and was active in the community until her failing health.

Mrs. Hood was a Golden and life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was a chartered and active member of Phi Upsilon Omega Chapter which was chartered February 04, 2001.

Mrs. Sallye Hood was preceded in death by her Parents, Effie and Clyde Ester Goode; her maternal grandparents, Willie and Cornelius Penchion; her paternal Grand-parents, Aaron and Sallye Goode; her sisters Ola Goode Sanders, Valrie Goode; and her late Husband Joe Louis Hood.

She is survived by her son, Darryl Glenn Hood (Gwendolyn), three grandchildren Gabrielle Alexis Hood, Gavin Alexander Hood of Henrico, Virginia and Taisha Travis, of Madison, Alabama; three loving sisters: Gladys Goode Madison, of Birmingham Alabama, Effie Goode Garner (David) and Carrie Goode Warren all of Town Creek, Alabama; three loving brothers: Clyde Goode Jr. (Vernell), Aaron Goode (Dorothy), all of Town Creek, Alabama and Percy Goode Sr. (Barbara), of Madison, Alabama; and two loving sisters- in-laws: Irene Johnson of Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Rebecca Hood of Town Creek, Alabama. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, sorority sisters, and friends.
