Vernell Horton Cannon, 86, of Decatur died Sunday, April 23rd at her home surrounded by family and friends. Her funeral will be Wednesday April 26th at 12 noon at First Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur. Swill be placed in the church one hour prior to her funeral. Burial will follow in Decatur City Cemetery.
She was the second child born to Guy and Josie Tisdale Horton on August 29, 1930 in Athens, Alabama. Her parents and brothers, George and Cleve, preceded her in death.
She was a member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Athens, Alabama in her youth. She graduated from Trinity High School in Athens, Alabama in 1949, and graduated from Alabama A&M College in 1953 in Normal, Alabama. On December 19, 1953, she married Eddie Eugene Cannon, from Greensboro, Alabama and to this union were born two sons; Kenneth Edwin and Larry Eugene. Nell taught school for 30 years and retired from Decatur City Schools in 1985. After retiring from teaching, Nell worked in the Calhoun Community College Book Store for about 10 years, and as a tutor at the A.C. Banks Academy after school. Nell was a long time member of First Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, on the Trustee Board, Deacon & Trustee Wives Board. She was a founding member of Les Belles Femme Social and Civic Club in 1955, Board member of Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama Morgan County Education Retirees Association, Alabama Education Association, Foundation for Mental Health Board. Nell as she was so fondly called, memoy will live on in the hearts of her two loving and devoted sons; Kenneth Edwin (Suraya) and Larry Eugene (Elaine) both of Decatur, Alabama. Five grandchildren; Crystal Cannon, Kenneth II, Angel, Jamar and Michael (Crystal).
